“Every time you start to feel yourself lose
control, just think of Jeremy. Think of how devastated he would be to
lose you. Think of how hard he’s fought to stay normal throughout
everything that’s happened. Remember your friend. Remember that there
are so many people who love and support you.”
Elena stared into Caroline’s kind blue eyes and felt tears choke her.
She reached out and wrapped Caroline in a hug as Klaus quietly stepped
into the room behind her and shut the door. He smiled at the two friends
embracing each other and knew he made the right decision in helping
Caroline teach Elena the ways of being a vampire.
“Are you ready to try to hunt, Elena?” Klaus questioned lightly.
Caroline pulled away from Elena and smoothed the dark brown hair around her face. “She’s ready.”
Elena nodded and stood slowly, running her hands down her thighs to wipe off the clamminess. “I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”
Klaus smiled softly and Elena crossed the room to pull the door open
and stroll into the hallway. She walked past Jeremy’s room and glanced
inside at her baby brother sound asleep in his bed, his arm thrown over
his eyes to shield them from the sun pouring in the curtains.
She leaned against the doorframe and stared at Jeremy and the rise
and fall of his chest. She listened to the sound of his strong heartbeat
and the swishing and flowing of the blood in his veins, just underneath
his skin.
Elena felt her fangs elongate and the veins underneath her eyes
protrude from her skin. Her first instinct was to panic and she stomped
the feeling back to the recesses of her mind as she took a deep,
steadying breath. She clenched her fists and closed her eyes, imaging
the look on her brother’s face when she finally walked through the door
during her transition.
She pictured the relief that had flooded his eyes and felt her face
return to normal, her teeth sliding back into her gums. Caroline stepped
up behind her and placed a calming hand on her shoulder, squeezing
gently.
“Good job, Elena,” she whispered proudly. “You did it.”
Elena nodded and closed her watery eyes again, shedding a single tear. “I can do it.”
The new vampire silently descended the staircase and Klaus wrapped
his arm around Caroline’s waist, bringing her into his embrace. “You did
a great job with her, Caroline,” he murmured honestly, staring into her
blue eyes. “You were meant to do this.”
Caroline nodded sadly and her sigh was watery when she met his eyes. “I wish I didn’t have to.”
